Previous studies show that rats’ whiskers have various functions such as discriminating different textures (Carvell and Simons, 1990; Guić-Robles et al., 1989), sensing apertures (Krupa et al., 2001), localizing objects (Ahissar and Knutsen, 2008), and perceiving sequence of tactile sensory inputs (Fanselow and Nicolelis, 1999). Another study using high-speed videography revealed that rats protract whiskers further in order to detect obstacles and to avoid collision (Arkley et al., 2014).
