Amitriptyline improves cognitive and neuronal function in a rat model that mimics dementia with lewy bodies
2022, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :The main component of Lewy bodies is α-synuclein (α-syn), which is encoded by the SNCA gene. Synaptic glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter mediating vital physiological functions [4,5], is mainly uptaken by glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1) [6], which plays a key role in maintaining the homeostasis of extracellular glutamate. When glutamate is not recycled effectively, the concentration of extracellular glutamate increases, which overstimulates postsynaptic receptors.
The role of sleep in regulating structural plasticity and synaptic strength: Implications for memory and cognitive function
2018, Sleep Medicine ReviewsCitation Excerpt :Bliss and Lømo [69] further developed the idea of a neural basis for memory and constructed a cellular and experimental model for hippocampal learning and memory, which is now widely known as long-term potentiation (LTP). Several changes in spine morphology have been observed after LTP induction including the enlargement of the spine head, as well as the widening and shortening of the spine neck [4,70–74]. Remarkably, such changes can occur already within minutes after LTP induction and can last at least up to a day [30,31,75–78].
Dendritic Spine Plasticity and Memory Formation
2017, Learning and Memory: A Comprehensive ReferenceSynapses, spines and kinases in mammalian learning and memory, and the impact of aging
2015, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral ReviewsCitation Excerpt :It is seen as the first phrasing that neuronal activity can influence neuronal networks. One of the first studies linking physical activity to synaptic changes were performed by the group of William Greenough, showing morphological changes in spines in rat occipital cortex induced by an enriched environment (Greenough et al., 1978; Weiler et al., 1995, for review). The first studies linking morphological plasticity in relation to behavioral training (learning) focused on dendritic anatomy, usually length and branching (Bailey and Kandel, 1993, for review).
