Optimized Signal Flow through Photoreceptors Supports the High-Acuity Vision of Primates
2020, NeuronCitation Excerpt :We considered the channels that mediate IKx (a low-threshold K+ current) and Ih (the hyperpolarization-activated cationic current; Gayet-Primo et al., 2018; Yagi and Macleish, 1994). In cones, these channels are stably activated over complementary voltages that span the physiological range (Barnes, 1994); hence, they are poised to set the steady membrane conductance. We found that both currents were larger in peripheral than foveal cones (Figures 7C–7F and S7).
Voltage- and calcium-gated ion channels of neurons in the vertebrate retina
2019, Progress in Retinal and Eye ResearchCitation Excerpt :Measurements of the membrane potential of rods and cones show it to be near −40 mV in darkness. These potentials are close to the activation midpoint value for IKx whereas Ih is minimally active at this potential (Attwell, 1986; Barnes, 1994). Thus, when light closes CNG channels in the outer segments, the dominant conductance will be IKx, and K+ efflux through these channels will drive the membrane potential in a hyperpolarizing direction.
Subacute ibuprofen treatment rescues the synaptic and cognitive deficits in advanced-aged mice
2017, Neurobiology of AgingCitation Excerpt :Specifically in rat models of aging, calcium-dependent processes associated with learning and memory are altered in the hippocampus. These changes include increased slow afterhyperpolarizations (Disterhoft et al., 1996; Landfield and Pitler, 1984; Moyer et al., 1992), deficits in LTP (Barnes, 1994; Barnes and Kidd, 1979; Shankar et al., 1998), and increased long-term depression (Norris et al., 1996, 1998). Furthermore, the decline of these hippocampal processes are correlated with memory deficits in hippocampal-dependent memory tasks (Thibault and Landfield, 1996).
