      However, there are striking physiological differences between those on the modiolar side and those on the pillar side, with respect to threshold sensitivity, which have been directly confirmed in cat (Liberman, 1982), guinea pig (Tsuji et al., 1997), and rat (Markowitz et al., 2020), and there are corresponding morphological differences in the mean sizes of the presynaptic ribbons as seen either in electron micrographs in cat (Merchan-Perez et al., 1996) or high-power confocal z-stacks in mouse (Liberman et al., 2011) and guinea pig (Hickman et al., 2021). Ultrastructural studies show that most LOC synapses on AN dendrites occur near their synaptic contacts with the IHCs (Liberman, 1980b). Thus, in control ears we expect that LOC terminals should form a cluster centered on the basal pole of the IHC, as indeed was observed.
