These regions were olfactory bulb [66], cerebellum [67], postnatal [11] and embryonic neocortex (where ∼18% of the cells could generate both neurons and oligodendrocytes in vitro) [68], hippocampus [69,70], and septum [71]. From these studies, it was recognized that neural progenitors or stem cells, when isolated from the CNS, had a predisposition to exit the cell cycle and differentiate unless an intervention was imposed upon them to sustain cycling and hence hold commitment in abeyance.

Sparse retroviral labeling has been extensively used for clonal analysis of the mammalian nervous system, especially in the retina and the cerebral cortex [14,26,40–43]. Sibling cells arising from individual progenitor cells have been found to form prominent radially aligned clusters in the developing retina as well as the cortex, supporting the concept of ontogenetic units [15].

2013, Human PathologyCitation Excerpt :It has been postulated in rodent models that there are 2 types of oligodendroglial progenitor cells, namely, O-2A and N-O cells. The former is supposed to differentiate to astrocytes and oligodendroglia [25,26] and the latter to neurons and oligodendroglia [27]. Although similar cells have not been identified in the human, the presence of glioneuronal progenitor cells such as N-O cells will reasonably explain the occurrence of oligodendroglial tumors with neuronal differentiation.
