2022, Clinical NeurophysiologyCitation Excerpt :The AP organization of the hippocampus is mainly comprised of synaptic projections formed by CA3 pyramidal neurons (Lorente de Nò, 1934; Miles et al., 1988; Amaral and Witter, 1989; Li et al., 1994). More specifically, CA3 posterior hippocampal neurons are extensively connected to neighboring and anterior CA3 clusters (Amaral et al., 1990), as well as the dentate, the hilus, and CA1 neurons; a connectivity pattern only partially observed by anterior hippocampal CA3 pyramidal neurons (Li et al., 1994). These longitudinal CA3 connections are key for hippocampal function, as their severing can cause profound deficit in spatial memory retention (Steffenach et al., 2002).
