Differential effects of lipopolysaccharide on cognition, corticosterone and cytokines in socially-housed vs isolated male rats
2022, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :For example, both LPS and systemic administration of IL-6 or IL-1β shift rats’ preference toward low-effort options that yield smaller rewards, consistent with behaviour that would be expected in an anhedonic state [36,37,92,121,134,139,141]. Environmental stressors, like chronic mild stress (CMS), decrease responding for reward [101,128], which may be caused by a generalized CMS-induced decrease in reactivity to rewards (for review, refer to [128]). Our finding that social isolation exacerbates cognitive deficits produced by LPS are consistent with the few studies that examine the contribution of concurrent inflammation and environmental stress to the pathogenesis of psychological disorders [44,137].
Wistar audiogenic rats display abnormal behavioral traits associated with artificial selection for seizure susceptibility
2017, Epilepsy and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :All experiments were conducted in the same well-lit room and under a constant white noise condition (55 dB SPL). This test consists of a paradigm in which the choice for water or sucrose consumption is measured in order to evaluate the behavioral expression of anhedonia [38,39]. The animals (9 Wistar rats and 7 WARs) were isolated and habituated to drink from two bottles on the day before test.
Reliability of the chronic mild stress model of depression: A user survey
2017, Neurobiology of StressExpression and nuclear translocation of glucocorticoid receptors in type 2 taste receptor cells
2014, Neuroscience LettersCitation Excerpt :Feeding behavior is strongly linked to the actions of GCs via the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis [5,21]; behavioral stress activates adrenal GC secretion while heightened HPA activity has chronic and transgenerational effects on many behavioral and physiological processes associated with feeding and metabolism [3,38]. For taste specifically, behavioral stress is known to modulate sweet and salt preferences in animal models where sweet preferences and sensitivity are significantly reduced [13,33,41]. Experimental disruption of the HPA axis (e.g., adrenalectomy) can diminish sweet preferences while increasing salt preferences, and hormone replacement (e.g., dexamethasone, deoxycorticosterone acetate) restores these preferences [11,34].
Vulnerability to dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid deficiency after exposure to early stress in rats
2013, Pharmacology Biochemistry and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :This test consisted of a two-bottle choice paradigm in which rats are given the choice between consuming water versus sucrose. This paradigm has been used extensively to assess the effects of stress-induced anhedonia (Papp et al., 1991; Sampson et al., 1992). Rats were single-housed and habituated to drinking water from two bottles for 5 days (n = 6–8 per group).
