Spatial correspondence between tactile projection patterns and the distribution of the antigenic Purkinje cell markers anti-zebrin I and anti-zebrin II in the cerebellar folium crus IIa of the rat
Section snippets
Animal preparation
A total of 18 adult Sprague–Dawley female rats (Simonsen Laboratories) were used in these experiments. Four served as controls only. In the 14 operated animals, the pattern of tactile projections in the folium crus IIa of one hemisphere was directly compared to the distribution of anti-zebrin I or anti-zebrin II labeling in the same hemisphere. In three of the operated animals, the contralateral hemispheres were also incubated in order to study the impact of surgery and electrophysiological
Distribution of anti-zebrin I/II labeling in crus IIa
In single transverse sections through crus IIa, we observed six general regions of anti-zebrin I or anti-zebrin II immunostained Purkinje cells (Fig. 1). The general size and locations of the anti-zebrin-positive regions, as viewed in individual sections, are consistent with those described in previous reports.6., 19. We have therefore adopted the previously proposed nomenclature, labeling the positive regions of the hemisphere P4a+, P4b+, P5a+, P5b+, P6+ and P7+ from medial to lateral (see,
Discussion
The results presented in this paper suggest that, at least in folium crus IIa of the rat, there is a close spatial correspondence between regions of positive and negative anti-zebrin-labeled Purkinje cells and physiologically defined granule cell layer patches (Fig. 4, Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7, Fig. 8, Fig. 9). This has been demonstrated for the boundaries of the dominating central ipsilateral upper lip-related patch (Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7), for transitions between iUL and iFBP patches inside
