Similar results have been described in various preclinical studies, where mouse strain-dependent variability (Jin et al., 2017; Malki et al., 2012; Benton et al., 2012; Crowley et al., 2005; Bourin et al., 2005; Lucki et al., 2001) and sex (Sramek et al., 2016; Sramek and Cutler, 2011; Kokras and Dalla, 2017; Keers and Aitchison, 2010; LeGates et al., 2019) are critical factors that affect the efficacy of some antidepressants drug and can change the effective dose of an antidepressant. These studies showed some mouse strains (ICR or C57BL/6J) respond faster and better to antidepressants than other mouse strains (DBA/2 or BALB/cJ; Balu et al., 2013; Sugimoto et al., 2011, 2010, 2008; Guzzetti et al., 2008; Ripoll et al., 2003).

The results were assessed by using mice TST, which is a predictive test of antidepressant-like activity.37 In addition, the involvement of the monoaminergic system in the mechanism of antidepressant-like action of the extract has been demonstrated, as well as its capacity to inhibit MAO A enzyme activity and to potentiate the anti-immobility effect of sub-effective doses of conventional antidepressants.

Up to now, it remains one of the most widely used models for depression because it provides a low-cost, fast and reliable platform for screening potential antidepressants with a strong predictive validity [14–16]. In this model, the capacity of a compound to reduce the immobility time of mice is considered as a performance of its antidepressant activity.
