Network Models of Epilepsy-Related Pathological Structural and Functional Alterations in the Dentate Gyrus
2017, The Rewiring Brain: A Computational Approach to Structural Plasticity in the Adult BrainThe duration of sustained convulsive seizures determines the pattern of hippocampal neurogenesis and the development of spontaneous epilepsy in rats
2012, Epilepsy ResearchCitation Excerpt :Seizure activities have been shown to induce a transient increase in neurogenesis in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the hippocampal DG (Scott et al., 2000; Parent, 2007). These newly generated neurons in ectopic locations within the hilus exhibit long and branched basal dendrites (Overstreet-Wadiche et al., 2006; Parent et al., 2006; Jessberger et al., 2007; Pierce et al., 2007; Walter et al., 2007). Several studies have reported an association of TLE with these histological abnormalities in granule cells, which may lead to aberrant neuronal circuits and hyperexcitability within the hippocampus (Scharfman et al., 2000; Scharfman, 2004).
