General Information

Submission of a manuscript indicates a thorough understanding of and compliance with the Society's statements on (1) the use of animals and humans in neuroscience research, (2) ethics, (3) sharing of reagents and animals, and (4) responsible conduct regarding scientific communication, which are available at http://www.sfn.org/guidelines.  In submitting to the Journal, the corresponding author must agree to abide by all relevant guidelines, including issues relating to authorship, conflict of interest, and making unique and propagable resources available.

Duplicate publication of research results is not acceptable. Submission of a manuscript to the Journal involves the tacit assurance that no similar report, other than an abstract, has been, or will be, submitted for publication elsewhere unless the Journal declines to publish the manuscript or it is withdrawn from consideration. Data that have been used in other reports must be identified. Permission must be obtained to reproduce any portion of a figure that was previously published, and the source must be fully acknowledged in the figure legend. Authors must include reprints or manuscripts describing any potentially overlapping work, whether published, in press or under review. Manuscripts with multiple authors are reviewed with the understanding that all authors have seen the submitted version and that they approve of the submission.

The Journal recognizes its responsibility to ensure that questions of scientific misconduct or dishonesty in research are adequately pursued. Should possible scientific misconduct or dishonesty be suspected or alleged, the Journal reserves the right to forward any submitted manuscript and associated material to the sponsoring institution, funding agency, or other appropriate authority for investigation.

Review Process

Authors direct their manuscript to one of the Journal's sections (Cellular & Molecular, Neurobiology of Disease, Behavioral/Systems/Cognitive, or Development/Plasticity/Repair) when they submit their manuscript. Authors may request specific Senior Editors or Reviewing Editors, but editor assignments will be made based on expertise of the editors, load, and scheduling. Accepted manuscripts will appear in the section selected by the authors, regardless of editor assignments.

Authors are requested to identify five reviewers who are well qualified to referee the work and would not have a conflict of interest in reviewing the paper. Authors should provide the name, address, and email for each potential referee. The Reviewing Editor will select reviewers for the manuscript. As a general rule, two independent reviewers will evaluate papers. If the initial two reviewers disagree, a third opinion may be sought. Reviewers do not have access to the manuscript after they submit their review.

Authors should also be aware that manuscripts might be returned without outside review when the Reviewing Editor and the Senior Editor deem that the paper is of insufficient general interest for the broad readership of The Journal of Neuroscience, or that the scientific quality is such that it is unlikely to receive favorable reviews. Editorial rejection is done to speed up the editorial process and to allow the authors' papers to be promptly submitted and reviewed elsewhere.

The Journal of Neuroscience is a member of the Neuroscience Peer Review Consortium, an alliance of neuroscience journals that have agreed to share manuscript reviews at the author's request. Its goals are to support efficient and thorough peer review of original research in neuroscience, to speed the publication of research reports, and to reduce the burden on peer reviewers. For information about the Consortium and instructions on how to forward reviews, please visit http://nprc.incf.org/authors/information-for-authors.

Manuscripts Accepted for Publication

Authors should take special care in manuscript preparation because author alterations are not allowed at proof stage (see Proofs and To Reduce Published Errors sections). The copyright agreement for accepted manuscripts, which must be signed by each author, assigns the copyright to the Society for Neuroscience.
