The Journal of Neuroscience Mini-Reviews

Objective

The Journal of Neuroscience Mini-Reviews provide an overview of a single theme or topic for the broad neuroscience audience of the Society for Neuroscience. The Mini-Reviews consist of a series of 3-5 short reviews from experts on related and complementary issues related to the general topic. Very narrow topics and reviews of the work of one or a few labs are not encouraged. The latter category of reviews is more suitable for one of the excellent review journals in the neurosciences. The goal of the Journal Mini-Review is to provide an introduction to a topic that is accessible to readers from the many subdisciplines of neuroscience. Mini-Reviews should not exceed a length of 15 printed pages; each individual contribution should consist of 2-3 printed pages (ca. 2000 words). It is anticipated that most figures would be summary or schematic figures rather than experimental data.

A Mini-Review is organized by an expert, who then selects the contributors and subtopics in coordination with the Editor-In-Chief. Mini-Reviews are sometimes solicited by the editors, but authors are also encouraged to submit potential topics for consideration. Mini-Review topics are selected after discussion with appropriate editors and experts as to the suitability for the broad audience of The Journal of Neuroscience. Interested authors must consult with the Editor-In-Chief prior to submission to determine the suitability of the topic for the Journal.

Procedures for Submission

  • Authors considering submission of mini-reviews must submit a 1-page outline of the topic and contributors to the Editor-In-Chief for approval (jn{at}sfn.org).

  • Once a mini-review topic is approved for consideration, it is expected that the completed reviews will be submitted within approximately 2 months so that publication remains timely.

  • Mini-reviews should be submitted via our online submission system, using the MR prefix to denote this submission type.

  • All submissions should be submitted to the Editor-In-Chief, who will oversee your submission much as a Senior Editor does.

  • Each of the minireviews in the series may not exceed 2-3 printed pages (ca. 2000 words) and should not contain more than two images.

General structure

There should be a brief 1-2 page introduction to the series, usually written by the organizer, followed by the series of 3-5 mini-reviews. Each section should be submitted as a separate manuscript at the online submission site. The organizer is encouraged to include at least 4 contributors so that the Mini-Review can go forward even if one contributor fails to provide a review in a timely manner. The contributors should be selected as to provide a variety of different approaches or perspectives to the general problem. For an example of the format, please see Disease-Modifying Pathways in Neurodegeneration (The Journal of Neuroscience, October 11, 2006; http://www.jneurosci.org/cgi/content/full/26/41/10349).

Submission and review procedures after approval

Submission follows the usual format for online submission to The Journal of Neuroscience. The submission site provides an option for identifying the submission as a mini-review. Authors are encouraged to review the submission guidelines for manuscripts at the Journal website and at the on-line submission site. Authors are encouraged to review the requirements for digital art. Once the approval of the topic has been granted and the Mini-Review is submitted, the mini-reviews will generally be submitted to a review by one or more experts in the field for their accuracy and suitability for The Journal of Neuroscience. A decision can be expected within 2-3 weeks of submission.

Benefits

Mini-reviews are placed at the top of the Table of Contents, thus providing excellent visibility in an issue. The authors may also submit a cover illustration for consideration. All submission and publication fees with Mini-Reviews are waived, including color figures, assuming that the length of the review corresponds to Journal guidelines.
