Frequently
Asked Questions about Member Subscriptions
- If I don't know my membership number, where can I find it?
You can find your membership number above your name on your dues notice,
or on the notification letter mailed to all members in December. If
you cannot find your membership number, contact the membership department
at (202) 962-4000 or email membership{at}sfn.org.
- Will I receive a password?
As you complete the subscription process, you will be prompted to select
a user name and password.
- What if I forget my password?
You may visit the password request page
on this Web site and we will email a new password to the email address
you specified when you created your account.
- May I share my password with friends, or is use limited solely
to me?
You are the only one licensed to use this password. Please keep it confidential.
- What does 'store my password' mean on the Sign In page?
Please read Help with Signing in Using
"Auto Sign In" for help.
- Why do you invade my privacy by using "cookies" on your site?
We do not use cookies to "see" what other sites or pages you have visited.
The Journal Online makes use of cookies only
to enable authorization control for online subscriptions. There are
three uses of cookies in our system (which we have to set twice each
due to a bug in one version of Internet Explorer):
- User name: this identifies you to our system
(and only to our system) as a Journal Online user.
- User key (encrypted): this enables our system
to verify that you're the same person who logged into the Journal
Online to start with. This key is set by the system.
- Real name: this allows us to display your real
name, and the option to change your password or user information,
on all Journal Online pages, rather than only those under
access control. This would be impossible using standard HTTP authentication.
Besides allowing convenient access to these options, it is also
a reminder that you are "signed in" to the Journal Online.
You also have the option to "Sign Out"; as it happens, the effect
of "Sign Out" is to destroy the cookie information.
Once you are logged in, if you have a full online subscription, our
system will set one additional cookie which securely identifies you
as a "Basic" subscriber; this allows us to bypass some database lookups
when you request a page, speeding up your access to the Journal
Online.
One additional note: unless you use the "Auto Sign In" option on our
login page, the cookie information we create in your browser is destroyed
as soon as you quit Netscape. On the other hand, if you use the "Auto
Sign In" option once and accept the cookies, the system will only bother
you once per session about the "Basic" subscription, since the other
cookies will remain resident on your computer.
- What do member subscribers have access to?
Tables of contents, abstracts, full text searching, full text
display, document delivery, PDFs, links to Medline and GenBank, future
tables of contents, and the advantage of having password access to the
Journal Online from any computer connected to the Internet.
- Will I still be able to subscribe to the print version?
The print version will continue to be available for the forseeable future.
See rates and ordering information.
- Are all SfN Members eligible to receive free access to the
Journal Online?
All classes of individual members of the Society for Neuroscience (regular,
student, foreign, affiliate and emeritus) are eligible for free access
to the Journal online.
- How can I access the Journal Online if I am not a
member of the Society for Neuroscience?
You must become a member of the
Society for Neuroscience to receive access to the Journal
Online. Without a subscription you only have access to tables of contents,
abstracts, and searching.
- How do I order a subscription to The Journal of Neuroscience?
