Cover picture: It has long been hypothesized that activated microglia migrate to lesions of the brain in a collective and highly directed manner. However, using an in vivo lesion model combined with acute in situ brain-slice techniques and time-lapse confocal videomicrography, we demonstrate that perilesional microglia migrate autonomously and stochastically in response to a focal brain lesion. The cover illustration represents time-lapse z-plane images collapsed into a two-dimensional projection and demonstrates nondirected migration of microglia (pseudocolored cells) in the vicinity of a focal brain lesion (vertical red line).
