Cover picture: Palatability is a key determinant of food intake. Two distinct classes of firing patterns (heat maps) in the nucleus accumbens are proposed to guide consummatory behaviors related to palatability. Heat maps show neural activity during consumption of a sucrose reinforcer (red line indicates onset of consumption), time-averaged over repeated reinforcer presentations. Hot colors show high firing rates; cool colors show low firing rates. Inhibitions (top) occurring before and during consumption are proposed to gate the onset of feeding bouts, whereas palatability-driven excitations (bottom) may prolong bout duration.
