Cover legend: The membrane potential of a fly neck motor neuron during repeated oscillation of the fly's halteres. Halteres are mechanosensory organs that act as gyroscopes, detecting rotations of the fly. Haltere signals like those shown gate the visual responses of some neck motor neurons. This may explain why the fly is constrained to only make reflexive head movements when walking or flying. The visual layout is a tongue in cheek reference to the famous record sleeve art for Joy Division's “Unknown Pleasures” album.
