Cover legend: Biocytin reconstructions of thalamocortical relay cells in the posterior medial nucleus (POM) of the thalamus. Inhibitory inputs onto these cells undergo non-Hebbian long-term potentiation (LTP) that depends on the firing mode of the relay cells. LTP induction requires low threshold calcium spikes that are generated from hyperpolarized potentials suggesting that this form of inhibitory plasticity is prevalent during sleep. The arrangement and morphology of the relay cells is reminiscent of stars shining at night. For more information, see Sieber et al. (15675–15685).
