Cover legend: Vagal sensory axon bundles and intraganglionic laminar endings (IGLEs) in smooth muscle of the intestine, labeled by anterograde transport of wheat-germ agglutinin–horseradish peroxidase. IGLEs are mechanoreceptors, consisting of planar aggregates of numerous densely packed terminal puncta. In the intestine, IGLEs are larger and more numerous in mice that have reduced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the intestine (shown here) than in controls. For more information, see the article by Biddinger and Fox in this issue. (pages 10379–10393).
