Cover legend: A major controversy in neuroscience concerns whether the hippocampus is dedicated to the mapping of physical space or instead supports declarative memory. In our mini-symposium, we argue that these divergent views can be reconciled by adopting Tolman's (1948) original conception of a cognitive map in which all domains of experience are systematically organized by dimensions of space, time, social and abstract relations, and more, and assigning to the hippocampus a fundamental role in representing memories within a multidimensional cognitive map (such as illustrated in this cover image by Taylor Williams).
