This photograph shows two marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus), New World primates that live in social groups and maintain rich vocal communications. Wireless recording in freely roaming, vocalizing marmosets revealed that neurons in premotor cortex have distinct activities prior to or during vocal production. Some of these neurons showed activities only to vocal production but not to other orofacial movements, suggesting the premotor cortex is involved in natural vocal behaviors in non-human primates.
