This image shows prefrontal cortical axons forming glutamatergic release sites at the mediobasal hypothalamus. Prefrontal axons were immunostained for green fluorescent protein (GFP in green), vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (vGLUT1 in blue), and vesicular GABA transporter (vGAT in red). Hypothalamic neurons were visualized by fluorescent Nissl staining (white). Prefrontal inputs directly regulate quantitative and qualitative aspects of aggression in the mediobasal and lateral hypothalamus, respectively. (pages 4065–4075).
