This illustration, inspired by the works of M. C. Escher, was constructed from one of the stimuli used in a study of how representations of objects in human lateral occipital cortex are transformed after the object undergoes a change in state (e.g., size or rotation). The study shows that these transformations are general because the transformation derived from a change in one object can be applied to a novel object to accurately predict the brain representation of the novel object after it undergoes the same change.
