This slice through a volume generated by electron tomography, along with the accompanying Movie, shows polarized cristae and crista junctions in mitochondria tethered to the subsurface cisternae (SSC) in a mouse outer hair cell. Aging was associated with crista and crista junction plasticity, SSC stress, decoupling of mitochondria from the SSC, mitochondrial fission/fusion imbalance, perturbed Ca2+ homeostasis, and modeled energy stress.
