Cover image expansion

Reflecting the past year's new normal, this cover imagines a virtual meeting among the key players in the early olfactory system. The meeting has been convened by an axon-bearing olfactory bulb (OB) dopaminergic neuron to organize a response to recently imposed sensory deprivation. From top-left to to bottom-right: confocal images of olfactory sensory neurons in the nasal epithelium; axon initial segments in the OB mitral cell layer; an axon-bearing OB dopaminergic interneuron; an activity marker (pS6) in OB excitatory cells; an OB mitral cell with its prominent axon initial segment (AIS; magenta); an activity marker (cFos) in the OB glomerular layer; dopaminergic neurons in the OB glomerular layer. External tufted cells, local excitatory interneurons in the OB glomerular layer known for their unkempt bushy protuberances, chose to keep their camera off. Formore information see the article by Galliano et al. (pages 2135–2151). Cover image: Elisa Galliano.
