This confocal image shows the axon of a neuropeptide-releasing modulatory projection neuron (red) and one of its target neurons, the lateral gastric neuron (blue) in the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion. Cells were labeled with intracellular dye injection and pseudo-colored. Peptide release from the projection neuron facilitates electrical spread in the dendrites of the lateral gastric neuron, supporting the maintenance of rhythmic motor pattern generation during heat challenges.
