About the Cover

These images show differences in brain activity between connected (externally focused) and disconnected (internally focused) states of consciousness. A central core network of consciousness was revealed by imaging anesthetic- and sleep-induced transitions in states of consciousness. Cool colors show the largest and warm colors the smallest relative suppression upon becoming disconnected (left columns) and warm colors show the largest and cool colors the smallest relative activation upon becoming connected (right columns).
