The image shows evolutionary (white above, from macaque monkeys to humans) and developmental (white below, from infants to human adults) factors applied on sequence learning (number strings 1-3-4-6-7-8). Different from macaque monkeys, humans, regardless of age, spontaneously extract the spatial relations between consecutive items and use a chunking strategy to compress sequences in working memory.
