Pictured is a myelinating oligodendrocyte in the mouse cerebral cortex visualized with oligodendrocyte-specific marker 2′,3′-cyclic nucleotide 3′ -phosphodiesterase (orange). Using this immunohistochemical staining technique, Timothy Chapman and colleagues demonstrated how the intricate morphology of these cells is connected to their function and cell death progression in neurodegenerative contexts. See the article by Chapman et al. for more information on how oligodendrocyte maturity dictates cell death mechanisms across the lineage. Cover image: Timothy Chapman.
