This image shows neurons in the pulvinar nucleus of the thalamus in a coronal mouse brain section. Visible in red are pulvinar neurons projecting to distinct areas of the higher visual cortex, labeled via AAV-FLEx-TVA injections. These TVA+ neurons are also infected with an EnvA–pseudotyped, G-deleted rabies virus expressing green. This viral injection strategy enables projection-specific labeling of brain-wide inputs. Comparison of corticothalamic (CT) inputs to different projection populations in the pulvinar revealed that layer 5 CT inputs are feedforward and anti-reciprocal, whereas layer 6 CT inputs are generalized and reciprocally biased.
