Pictured is the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus in an adult mouse. To visualize synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A, green) and 2C (SV2C, red) mRNA expression, RNAscope colabeling was used. SV2A is implicated in epilepsy and is targeted by the antiseizure medication levetiracetam. But the roles SV2A plays in different synapses and how this glycoprotein isoform is targeted by levetiracetam remain unclear. Odile Bartholome and colleagues used SV2A knockout mice to explore these unknowns, examining seizure phenotypes following deletion of SV2A from distinct hippocampal cell types. See the article by Bartholome et al. for more information on which SV2A-expressing cells may contribute to epileptic seizures and be targeted by levetiracetam. Cover image: Virginie Neirinckx
