  • Rat hippocampal slices were prepared as described in Materials and Methods and were either frozen immediately without incubation (nonincubated) or were subsequently incubated in cooled (31°C) aCSF that was subsequently warmed to 36°C. After at least 1 hr at 36°C, incubated slices were superfused with normal, oxygenated aCSF for 0, 12, or 42 min. Compartmental data from these timed control periods (i.e., 0, 12, and 42 min) did not differ statistically and therefore were combined to form a pooled incubated control. Elemental concentrations from analyses of CA1 nerve cell compartments are expressed as mean millimoles of element per kilogram of dry weight ± SEM. Compartmental water contents are expressed as mean percentage water ± SEM. *Significantly different (p < 0.05) from incubated control.
