↵F2-a The degree of temperature compensation was determined by one of two methods, and the results were combined. In method 1, locomotor activity of each animal was recorded for 1 week each at both 20 and 27°C; only flies surviving both weeks were counted. In method 2, locomotor activity of each animal was recorded for 1 week at 20 or 27°C only.
↵F2-b Number of individuals tested.
↵F2-c Within genotype difference in mean period at 20 and 27°C. The differences in Δτ between genotypes 2 and 4, 3 and 5, and 3 and 6 were compared using Student's t test (p < 0.001 for all).
↵F2-d NA, Not applicable. Only 1 animal of 15 was rhythmic at 20°C.
↵F2-e Two of the per-ΔC2 lines showed significant loss of rhythmicity at 20°C. This may indicate an effect of the mutation on the temperature limits of rhythmicity. However, there was also some loss of rhythmicity at 20°C in theper-con (2) line; thus, the specificity of the effect is questionable.
