Distribution and rating of cells that colocalize dynorphin mRNA and FosB-IR and enkephalin and FosB-IR in rat nucleus accumbens core and shell in runners (n = 8) and control (n = 8). The rating of + indicates 0–10 colocalizing cells/mm2, ++ indicates 10–20 colocalizing cells/mm2, and +++ indicates >20 colocalizing cells/mm2. Analysis was performed by an independent observer on coded slides.
