  • Ultrathin optic nerve cross-sections were prepared from β1 (+/+) and β1 (−/−) mice and analyzed as described in Materials and Methods. Fifty evenly distributed, nonoverlapping fields, each representing 108 μm2 of endoneurial area, were photographed at 7900X. The total numbers of myelinated axons per field were counted and reported as mean ± SEM. The average numbers of axons in each genotype were not significantly different as assessed by Student's t test.
