Myelination of regenerating optic nerve axons occurs in conjunction with an increase of the oligodendrocyte precursor cell population in the adult mice
2021, Brain Research BulletinCitation Excerpt :Besides, it is not rare for environmental factors to stimulate early or late progression of OPCs fate, but not both (Wheeler and Fuss, 2016). FGF-2 has been shown to stimulate OPCs proliferation, while it inhibits their differentiation (Gard and Pfeiffer, 1993; McKinnon et al., 1993). Bone morphogenetic proteins and autotaxin signaling has been shown to promote exclusively early OPC differentiation (See et al., 2004; Wheeler et al., 2015).
Extracellular cues influencing oligodendrocyte differentiation and (re)myelination
2016, Experimental NeurologyCitation Excerpt :The family of fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) has been shown to exert distinct roles in cells of the OLG lineage via the activation of three of the four known tyrosine kinase FGFRs, FGFR1, 2 and 3 (Bansal, 2002). Out of the at least 23 members of the FGF family, 10 have been described to be expressed in the CNS (Ford-Perriss et al., 2001), and FGF-2, the prototypic member of the family, has long been known to stimulate OPC proliferation, while at the same time inhibiting OLG differentiation (Gard and Pfeiffer, 1993; McKinnon et al., 1993). FGF-2 facilitated stimulation of OPC proliferation is thought to be mediated by the activation of FGFR1, while inhibition of OLG differentiation may involve both FGFR1 and FGFR3 (Fortin et al., 2005; Zhou et al., 2006).
Impaired oligodendrocyte maturation in preterm infants: Potential therapeutic targets
2016, Progress in NeurobiologyCitation Excerpt :PDGF plays an important role in regulating the developmental program of OLs (see Section 5) and acts on OPCs via its receptor PDGFRα, of which expression seizes after differentiation. In vitro, PDGF stimulates proliferation, whereas it potently inhibits differentiation of OPCs (Baron et al., 2000; Gard and Pfeiffer, 1993). In early stages of OL development, PDGF stimulates activation of MAPKs p38, ERK and JNK in order to promote proliferation (Baron et al., 2000; Chew et al., 2010).
Isolation and culture of human oligodendrocyte precursor cells from neurospheres
2015, Brain Research BulletinDifferential effects of growth factors on oligodendrocyte progenitor migration
2011, European Journal of Cell BiologyCitation Excerpt :Differential roles for PDGF-A and FGF2 have been discussed previously (Gard and Pfeiffer, 1993). A combination of PDGF and FGF2 has previously been hypothesized to regulate lineage progression of the cells from OP to mature OL (Gard and Pfeiffer, 1993). Our findings from the current study support this hypothesis.
