Summary
-
1.
The pyloric system of the lobster stomach is controlled by fourteen neurons contained within the Stomatogastric ganglion, of which 13 are identified as motor neurons.
-
2.
The neurons are functionally organized into dilators and constrictors of the pyloric region of the stomach.
-
3.
The motor output occurs in the form of bursts to antagonistic muscles.
-
4.
The synaptic connections between motor neurons are either inhibitory or electrotonic.
-
5.
The basic rhythmicity derives from a group of three neurons with endogenous burst capability. The observed phase relationships in the other neurons results from the synaptic connectivity. The cyclic motor output can occur in the deafferented preparation.
