However, early studies suggested that insulin has a neurotrophic function and can promote neurite outgrowth in cultured neuronal cells (Bhat, 1983; Recio-Pinto and Ishii, 1984; Schechter and Abboud, 2001). Indeed, insulin signaling is essential for axon guidance in drosophila (Song et al., 2003).
