Plasticity and alterations of trunk motor cortex following spinal cord injury and non-stepping robot and treadmill training
2014, Experimental NeurologyCitation Excerpt :However, our results demonstrate a significant expansion of trunk motor representation into the rostral motor cortex (i.e., away from the de-efferented cortex) and this was coupled with reduced total motor sites in the de-efferented caudal cortex (due to loss of hindlimb representation) in transected groups. The de-efferented cortex is sensory motor overlap cortex and hence can be more vulnerable to silencing, as reported in other studies (Donoghue and Wise, 1982; Hummelsheim and Wiesendanger, 1985). Reduced total motor response in de-efferented cortex has been shown to correlate with time after injury in clinically complete thoracic SCI patients (Lotze et al., 2006) and was also observed in rats with incomplete cervical (Tandon et al., 2013) or thoracic (Fouad et al., 2001) lesions.
