Responses and functions of dopamine in nucleus accumbens core during social behaviors
2022, Cell ReportsCitation Excerpt :Given the important role of dopamine (DA) in reward, motivation, and behavior activation, many studies have been carried out since the early 1990s to ask how DA level changes in NAc during social behaviors (Berridge and Robinson, 1998; Bromberg-Martin et al., 2010; Wise, 2004). Early microdialysis studies with a temporal resolution of minutes revealed a gradual increase of DA in NAc in male rats that copulated to ejaculation with receptive females (Damsma et al., 1992; Fumero et al., 1994; Pfaus et al., 1990; Pleim et al., 1990; Wang et al., 1995; Wenkstern et al., 1993). Later fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) recording with a higher temporal resolution (subsecond) found that DA transients increased mainly during initial female encounter but not during consummatory phase of sexual behaviors, such as deep thrust (Robinson et al., 2001, 2002).

2018, Physiology and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :Male rodent sexual behavior consists of two phases, the appetitive phase of approaching and investigating the receptive female, and subsequent consummatory phase of a stereotyped sequence of copulatory behaviors including mount, intromission and ejaculation [1]. Using in vivo microdialysis technique, previous studies have reported that extracellular dopamine (DA) level in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) of freely moving male animals significantly increased during copulation with a receptive female in both sexually experienced [2–5] and naïve [6] male rats of different strains, including Long-Evans (LE) and Sprague-Dawley (SD). These microdialysis data suggested that copulation unconditionally elicits a reward state, since mesolimbic dopaminergic neurons innervating the NAcc are activated by natural reward, rewarding drugs and reward-predicting cues [7–9].

Although there is currently no direct evidence for glutamate release in the NAc during mating, is it well established that dopamine is released in the NAc during mating (Pfaus et al., 1990; Meisel et al., 1993; Fumero et al., 1994) and that dopamine and glutamate are co-released in mesoaccumbens axons (Tecuapetla et al., 2010; Zhang et al., 2015). Together these findings suggest a potential interaction between NMDA and D1 receptor activation during reward experience.

Biochemical investigations have shown that 5-HT2A (De Deurwaerdère and Spampinato, 1999) and 5HT3 receptor stimulation increases DA release in the nucleus accumbens (Imperato and Angelucci, 1989; Jiang et al., 1990; Chen et al., 1991; Parsons and Justice, 1993; Mylecharane, 1996), an important brain area in which DA increases during appetitive and consummatory phases of male sexual behavior (Pfaus et al., 1990; Pleim et al., 1990; Damsma et al., 1992; Wenkstern et al., 1993; Fumero et al., 1994; Mas et al., 1995). OT, as DA, has also clear facilitative effects.
