Harnessing the effects of endurance exercise to optimize cognitive health: Fundamental insights from Dr. Mark P. Mattson
2020, Ageing Research ReviewsCitation Excerpt :Importantly, studies by Dr. Mattson and colleagues have demonstrated that physical exercise can positively influence BDNF abundance and action (Mattson, 2012a). As a neuroprotective agent, BDNF defends neurons against the metabolic, excitotoxic, and oxidative challenges of aging and aging-related conditions such as AD and PD (Cheng and Mattson, 1994; Mattson, 2002). It also promotes neurogenesis, neurite outgrowth, synaptogenesis, and stress resistance (Marosi and Mattson, 2014).
