The learning of fear extinction
2014, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral ReviewsCitation Excerpt :These findings are compatible with hypotheses relating the amygdala to the perception of that vague but strong unconditioned sensation we humans call fear (LeDoux, 2014; Costanzi et al., 2011), and the hippocampus to more elaborate analysis of behavior including contextual learning cues (or “constellations of CSs”, Konorski, 1967; Wyrwicka, 1994; Ji and Maren, 2007, 2008). See the papers of Hirsh and his colleagues for an early postulation of the role of the hippocampus in the analysis of contexts (Hirsh, 1974; Hirsh et al., 1978). Whereas the perhaps predominant concept is that the hippocampus, like the amygdala, are in charge of gating information to the vmPFC and/or sending inhibitory the hippocampus and the vmPFC act in concert in fear extinction (Milad et al., 2007), which is not incompatible with an involvement in feedback.
