The distribution of both NGF mRNA (Shelton and Reichardt, 1986) and protein (Nishio et al., 1992) in rats were also broadly distributed, but the highest intensity has been reported in the neocortex, hippocampal pyramidal layer and striatum (Gall and Isackson, 1989; Rylett and Williams, 1994). Our study, which consists of a morphological evaluation of NGF distribution and not a merely quantitative study, did not lead us to consider a prevalent presence of NGF in forebrain regions as in mammals.
