Adult brain cytogenesis in the context of mood disorders: From neurogenesis to the emergent role of gliogenesis
2021, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral ReviewsCitation Excerpt :These glial precursors follow distinct differentiation pathways and may culminate in the generation of astrocytes due to specific factors in the microenvironment of the cell (Bonni et al., 1997; Freeman, 2010; Ge et al., 2012; Rajan and McKay, 1998). Indeed, unlike neurons, glial cells can retain their ability to proliferate in most brain areas of postnatal and adult subjects (Gensert and Goldman, 2001; Kornack and Rakic, 2001; Kraus-Ruppert et al., 1975; Rajkowska and Miguel-Hidalgo, 2007). Particularly, the generation of astrocytes is also detectable in the neocortex and hippocampus of the adult human brain (Bhardwaj et al., 2006; Eriksson et al., 1998).
