Additionally, the lesion site maintains a pro-inflammatory phenotype chronically after SCI, which may hinder wound healing and regeneration (Beck et al., 2010; Blight, 1983, 1991; Popovich et al., 1997). Due to these detrimental effects of inflammation after SCI, inhibiting inflammation has been a major goal for improving outcomes after SCI.
