Structure-function analysis of rhythmogenic inspiratory pre-Bötzinger complex networks in "calibrated" newborn rat brainstem slices
2009, Respiratory Physiology and NeurobiologyCitation Excerpt :Our studies on calibrated preBötC slices in that regard were done in 1 mM Ca2+ (Ruangkittisakul et al., 2006, 2008). In contrast, preBötC-driven C4 bursting was blocked in the newborn rat en bloc model in 2.4 mM Ca2+ following transection at the level of the BötC (Onimaru and Homma, 1987), while it was slowed upon similar section in 2 mM Ca2+ (McLean and Remmers, 1994) and not changed in frequency in 1.5 mM Ca2+ (Smith et al., 1991). These discrepant results suggested that the activity of the isolated preBötC depends critically on superfusate Ca2+.
