Abstract

  • 1.

    1. Fasted Helix aspersa Muller readily ingest a 1% solution of non-dialysed Blue Dextran but do not ingest dialysed Blue Dextran.

  • 2.

    2. Fully-fed Helix do not ingest non-dialysed Blue Dextran, suggesting that the ingestion of Blue Dextran is a feeding response, rather than a response to dehydration.

  • 3.

    3. Fasted Helix do ingest dialysed Blue Dextran containing 25 mM glucose, suggesting that ingestion of substrate fluid is initiated by low molecular weight substances, such as glucose, which can be removed by dialysis.
