Baseline [Ca2+]o was 1.1–1.2 mM when compared to a bicarbonate free electrolyte (Nicholson et al., 1976). However, with physiological concentrations of bicarbonate [Ca2+]o had to be increased to keep the physiological baseline level (Mody and Heinemann, 1986) due to the calcium chelating effect of bicarbonate.
