Neurobiology and therapeutic applications of neurotoxins targeting transmitter release
2019, Pharmacology and TherapeuticsCitation Excerpt :Based on electrophoretic mobility, the crude venom has been separated into four distinct fractions, three toxic (α, β and γ) and one non-toxic (Kullmann, de Groat, & Artim, 2009). It has been reported that α-BuTx belongs to 3FTxs and binds to post-synaptic nicotinic receptors at the neuromuscular junction, while the β- and γ-BuTxs belong to PLA2 and act at presynaptic terminals to reduce acetylcholine release (Chang, Chang, Wagner, & Chey, 1999; Halliwell & Dolly, 1982a, 1982b; Lewis & Garcia, 2003; Lewis & Gutmann, 2004). The initial studies have been followed by identification of an additional, κ-BuTx, also with a postsynaptic site of action.
