Abstract

Colocalization of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) immunoreactivity with somatostatin (SOM), neuropeptide Y (NPY), cholecystokinin (CCK), and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) immunoreactivity was demonstrated in non-pyramidal neurons of the basolateral amygdala using a two-color immunoperoxidase procedure. Approximately 80–90% of SOM- and NPY-positive neurons in the basolateral amygdala were also immunoreactive for GABA. Virtually all large CCK-positive neurons also exhibited GABA-like immunoreactivity. About one-half of VIP-positive neurons and small CCK-positive cells were also immunoreactive for GABA.

GABAergic ‘local’ interneurons are dispersed throughout the BLA and supply feedback inhibition to the pyramidal cells (Spampanato, Polepalli, & Sah, 2011). These ‘local’ GABAergic interneurons are a heterogeneous population that differs with respect to the expression of calcium-binding proteins, neuropeptides, and synaptic targets (McDonald & Mascagni, 2001; McDonald & Pearson, 1989; Prager, Bergstrom, Wynn, & Braga, 2016). The calcium-binding proteins parvalbumin (PV) and calbindin (CB) are co-expressed in 40–60% of BLA GABAergic interneurons (Mascagni, Muly, Rainnie, & McDonald, 2009; McDonald & Betette, 2001; McDonald & Mascagni, 2001).

CeA is the primary output region connecting the AMG to the brain regions, which regulate anxiety-related behavior (Calhoon and Tye, 2015). NPY is expressed in GABAergic interneurons and projection neurons in the CeA and BLA (McDonald and Pearson, 1989; Wood et al., 2016). Postsynaptic Y1 receptors are found on pyramidal cells and interneurons in the BLA (Rostkowski et al., 2009).
