Carbenoxolone prevents chemical eye ischemia-reperfusion-induced cell death via 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 inhibition
2017, Pharmacological ResearchCitation Excerpt :These findings are supported by previous studies demonstrating that CBX has suppressive effects on ROS formation in the liver of C57BL/6-Lepob/ob mice, and up-regulated 11β-HSD1 increases oxidative stress in preadipocytes through activation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) [28,41]. In the case of increased calcium level, Reiner and colleagues [42] reported that IAA induces changes in membrane potential, and this results in the activation of calcium channels, which allows the influx of calcium ions into the intracellular space. Increased intracellular calcium can promote 11β-HSD1 activity [43].

2010, NeuropharmacologyCitation Excerpt :SRIF and its sst2 analogs were shown to inhibit the ischemia-induced neovascularization in a mouse model of oxygen induced retinopathy (Smith et al., 1997; Higgins et al., 2002) and depicted neuroprotective effects against NMDA and kainate-induced excitotoxicity in the central nervous system (Forloni et al., 1997; Braun et al., 1998). In rat retina, sst2/5 selective ligands (BIM23014, MK678 and cortistatin) protected the retina from ischemic insult (Mastrodimou et al., 2005) in an in vitro model of chemical ischemia (NaCN/iodoacetic acid; Reiner et al., 1990). Octreotide (sst2/5 ligand) was also shown to protect the guinea pig retina from ischemia reperfusion injury (Celiker and Ilhan, 2002).
